I know many people don’t have breakfast in their vocabulary, but  I like breakfast.

Mum had her rules in my family, for example we always had 3 meals on time every day, so breakfast was not an important one but always there. She cooked friend eggs for me and dad, with sometimes homemade porridge or soy milk, all delicious.

Since I moved out, I started to prepare breakfast by myself and toaster was the first thing I tried.  Toast was not a problem to make but the toast paste was not easy to choose. After many tries, I realised that I prefer peanut butter to jam or others, especially the chunky one. Vegemite is something I will never like, though Vegemite cheesybite is much better.

Sometimes I go out for breakfast. Well in China there are quite a lot of choices for breakfast, even for vegetarians like me and I like douhua, baozi, and tea eggs the most. Interestingly in each city people have different different breakfast. I remember clearly that in Suzhou, I used to have Shengjian everyday, Whereas in Wuhan, Reganmian was so popular. Unfortunately these things can be only found in those cities, like many other food, so whenever I have chance to go to these cities, I will have local breakfast.

A very interesting experience to have breakfast on a plane. Airlines from Asia often offer two kinds of breakfast: Chinese one – normally porridge with pickled vegetables and Western one. While in other airlines like Qantas there is normally one choice – omelette. I am not a fan of omelette as I don’t like to eat yolk, so often at that time I miss the fried eggs from mum – the classic sunrise one.

Another interesting breakfast is in a hotel. When I was travelling in Europe, breakfast was usually included and they usually gave me a lot. After a few days of feeling so full, I started to think if I could bring those extra food out of breakfast to keep them for my lunch. From then on I stole lots of bread and fruits from different hostels. Actually when I talked to many travellers, they all had the similar “steals” in their hostels, seems I was not the worst traveller.

Now I still have regular breakfast everyday, normal muesli or Kelogg’s Nutri-Grain with my homemade yoghurt, simple and easy. I once heard a story saying how wonderful bacon is – equal to sex, but I really think I can have nice breakfast without bacon too.
